Family Rules

So between an entry way redo, shredding (which is a job in itself 20 minutes my butt. Takes me an extra 10 just to get off the floor after each move!) preschool for thing 1. Party planning for thing 2. I decided to tackle this pretty diddy.

Our family rules canvas. They're all the rage ya know. I had to jump on the bandwagon. It originated with Lindsay's bff Nicole (with the amazing kitchen and super cute square potty.) I purchased a 28x30 canvas from Michael's, on sale of course and picked out a ton o' scrapbook paper that I couldn't live without. Lately I'm really into blues, don't tell my husband but I'm secretly craving a blue kitchen. Shhh. Turqouises, mustards, and olive green. What a combo huh? I went with all those and some red because it's my fav, of course.

Sorry, night time picture.
Wow I make it sound like a science to picking paper.
Okay, it's true. It is. :)
Matte Mod podge, 10 or so foam brushes (I used 4 because apparently the shred is working and I kept brushing too hard to get the bubblies out and broke them. Whoops. Don't know my own strength.) paint pens, and a steady patient hand. I painted the sides that will show & cut my paper in strips with different edges and layered them until it filled up the canvas.

They'll bubble.
I know huh, bummer.
You probably wont get past that downside but I did notice they smoothed out as it dried. It wasn't as horrible as I thought it would be. Don't fret! More bubbles more character I like to say!

Okay, okay. After a couple coats and some drying it's time to pick your rules and fonts. I went to dafont.com and looked up which ones I wanted. Nicole printed hers and eye balled them, I didn't have a printer (gasp!) so I used the preview section of the font and wrote out my rule and eyeballed it from the computer. Or if you have incredibly good handwriting-- go solo! :)

I alternated white paint and black paint by the color of the paper, which by fate just happened to go white-black-black-white. That my friends, is a pattern. Love it when things like that happen. Another coat of MP and you're all set! Hang that baby up and watch your kids follow it to a T.
I should have added no trying on Mommy's make-up while she's not looking. Shoot.

;)
Now if I could only pick a set spot on where to hang it!

Ohhh I would absolutely LOVEEEE to win this! These doors look amazing!!!

My fiance and I just bought our very first home. Its super small and needs tons of work but its so nice to say that its our! My fiance is in the Navy and just returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan so we are trying to do our very best to make our little house a home on the very small budget that we have. Its certainly been fun though and its just nice to have him home and start making our home together. But I would so love to have this on our door to welcome us each day!

And now that Im thinking about it, we don't even have house numbers on our house!!! Just very small ones in stickers on our horrible mailbox (I swear its the ugliest thing ever - its a black plastic horrible barn looking thing, ugh!). So I'm really really really hoping I win these!!!

Thanks so much for the chance to win! *crossing my fingers tight!!!*

Oh how you complete me.

Next week is Miss LB2's Birthday. Her Second Birthday. God gave us such an amazing piece to our little family puzzle & I can't imagine life without her. She really completed us!

Because I'm goin' all Mama Bear on you all, enjoy this re post from her first birthday last year.

My love, my life.

I prayed for this child and God has given me what I asked of Him 1Samuel 1:27
Almost Two years ago I decided to have another baby. Yes, I was barely 20. I was still too young, still too crazy. What was I thinking? What was I thinking when I had my first at 18? Well, your right..the first time I wasn't.
Things changed. I wasn't 18 anymore, I was a mom with a family, in a little house with a little dog. A house with pictures in them. Pictures of a family of three.

Someone was missing. 20 or not, something was missing. Everyone said I was crazy when I was going to actually TRY and get pregnant. Gasp! Who does that when they have the rest of their lives ahead of them?
Oh you didn't get the memo? Your life ends with children. Anyways we planned and...tried. And planned and tried. Nothing, no baby? It wasn't this hard the first time? Time went by, and after 50 or so pregnancy tests one finally gave me what I wanted. +

Flash forward 9 months...

Hello beautiful.

Today is her birthday. We went out, had some fun. A fellow mom said to me "You're my daughters age and you have two kids?"

Yes, yes I do.

At 18, yes I wanted to be free. Move far away somewhere warm make a ton'o money and worry about numero uno.

At 21 I want to be a mom. My children are the absolute best thing that were given to me. I'm not the average 21 year old, I'm a mommy. Is it so hard to look at me without sad eyes at what my life could have been? Instead seeing how amazing my life really is? I have no regrets, why do strangers with no clue, tell me how hard it must be.

Babe, the bars ain't got nothin' on you! ;)

Happy Birthday love, my life.

Tease that hair, girlfriend.

Snowed in Monday nights tend to get a little...crazy 'round these parts. It involves Michael Jackson's Beat it, some hair spray. And, cowgirl boots. Jersey shore aint got nothin' on us!

Dishes can wait.

The floor will still have crumbs and toys on it.

Bed time can be pushed back.

While we poof our hair, do a combination of a ho-down & the jersey shore fist pump-- dancing like mad women, laugh until we cry ... and pee a little.

Board and Batten on the cheap

Welcome to my board and batten on the cheap tutorial. Otherwise known as the longest post in the world of blog land. I'd make a pot of coffee... or get a big gulp, if you're classy like me.

So far this project has cost me under 100.00 and I'm trying really hard to add the bench and keep it under 150.00 total. I think that's pretty good for wood, glue and paint eh?

To start, get a sitter or recruit your father to tag along to herd the children when they get out of the cart. Because they will get out of the cart when you're trying to saw away at the 8 foot pieces of trim. Then switch and let him saw while you take them to the potty, 17.5 times.

True story.

I needed about 20 ( 61.5 inch long ) pieces of 1 inch trim. I believe it was about .59 cents a foot? (Anyone realizing I'm horrible at the tutorials?)

Did you ask why the heck I decided to make it 61.5 inches? Well, the previous owners didn't mud very well when they redid the entry way and that's exactly where the tape was. The placement that I have the horizontal piece covers it exactly. Believe me, I would have rather done 62 even. I don't like odd confusing numbers. Strange yes?

Next up, 12 feet of 3 inch thick trim. I builder Dad cut it into three pieces to fit into the car easier. Such a thinker that man! I also purchased the same amount of corner trim. It's L shaped which is PERFECT for a little bit of some picture leanin' love going on in the entry way I have a vision of. Some paneling glue and you're set to go! Scratch that, I had some finishing nails at home, you'll need a box of those too if you don't have a nail gun, like this chick. They're itty bitty and perfect to help hold the trim up. I only used two per piece so it's not like you'll be hammering all day.

I didn't say you wouldn't be gluing all day though.

Meet liquid nails.

This little guy will become your best friend if you don't own a nail gun. Those of you that do. Hate you...That is all.

Anyway, the glue--So much less work than nails, that is if you're like me and continually miss the nail and make 1000 and 1 dents in the wall. Bead some glue on the back of the trim and slap her on the wall. Make sure to level it off, the LAST thing you want is to have the glue set and later realize it's crooked. It will throw EVERYTHING off. You knew that though right? Yes. Tape it over with painters tape to help hold it. Level. Measure again. Level again and hammer a trim nail on each end.

Then if you have major OCD like I do, measure and level one more time... Then make sure no ones watching and do it again.. Just for good measure.

Ba dum bump.

*Snort*

Continue till you're all done with the horizontal top. Using your miter saw for the corners, I'm not lucky enough to have anything power saw related so I used my little miter box saw. It worked just fine, barely broke a sweat!

Don't swear like a sailor when your corners are a bit off either, that's what wood filler is for. Works like a charm.

Now on to the vertical pieces. The battens if you will. All of them needed to be 61.5 inches long-- time to measure and cut. Over and over. Then measure the distance apart. I planned on doing every 6 inches, but that ran into a outlet-- stupid electricity. So 7 it is, I marked the first one and went on every 8 inches from there.

The absolute worst part about this trim, which made me want to give up and get some MDF and cut it into 1 inch pieces? Some of it was oh so slightly bent.

Like you looked at it and thought it was straight, and bam fooled you. Neil Patric Harris anyone?

Right...Uh...anyways.

No worries I worked around it-- hiding them behind where the bench will be. Let me tell you, after 4 hours of this I wasn't worried anymore if one piece was 1/316th too far over. It worked out. Magically.

See..when you live with the Nester's IDHTBPTBB mentality it's hard to be a master tutorializer. I don't stress the small stuff.

Once everything was glued, taped, measured, leveled, nailed, gawked at, given the champion dance to-- it was time to prime (24 hours later so the glue could set, if you're using nails- go ahead and paint). Yuck. I dread painting. I get all geeked for it for about 2 minutes. Then my arm starts to get tired. And, this particular day-- I started The Shred the night before. Let me just tell you, try holding your arm above your head to paint.. or worse yet, squatting down to get the bottom. Death. Jillian Michaels wished death upon me.

Ahem.

I primed and then 2 hours later when it was dry caulked the imperfections. Let that dry and primed again. Once it was dry I added the L piece trim to the top for a little ledge and some more bulk to the horizontal trim. We also purchased a 12 inch deep shelf from Home Depot and cut it to fit the little alcove we have. It was the same thickness as the corner (L shaped) trim so it was a little more of a built in look, happy day!

So far I have one coat of white satin paint on it.

It still needs another coat as you can tell. But I think it's 135% better, no make that 136%. It's amazing what a little paint and some trim can do! It's so much cleaner and brighter. Before and after anyone?

Before.

After.
